Here's the simple version: methyclothiazide is a water pill that lowers your blood pressure by helping your body shed extra salt and fluid. Periwinkle contains a compound called vincamine that, at least on paper, can also relax and widen blood vessels and nudge blood pressure down. So if you take the two together, the worry is that their blood-pressure-lowering effects could stack up.

If that happens, you might feel lightheaded, dizzy, weak, or faint, especially when you stand up quickly. Just so you know, this concern is theoretical and comes from how the compound behaves in lab and animal studies, not from solid human trials. Still, since periwinkle can be potent, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Periwinkle (Vinca minor) is a flowering plant whose alkaloids are the source of vinpocetine, a compound marketed for memory and brain circulation. Evidence in humans is limited and mixed, and the plant contains potent compounds that can be toxic in larger amounts, so it should be used only with professional guidance. A closely related plant, Madagascar periwinkle, is the source of important cancer chemotherapy drugs but is not safe to use as a home remedy.

What Is Methyclothiazide Used For?

  • Methyclothiazide is used to treat high blood pressure. Methyclothiazide is also used to treat edema (fluid retention; excess fluid held in body tissues) caused by various medical problems, including heart, kidney, and liver disease and to treat edema caused by using certain medications including estrogen and corticosteroids. Methyclothiazide is in a class of medications called diuretics ('water pills'). It works by causing the kidneys to get rid of unneeded water and salt from the body into the urine.

  • High blood pressure is a common condition and when not treated, can cause damage to the brain, heart, blood vessels, kidneys and other parts of the body. Damage to these organs may cause heart disease, a heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision, and other problems. In addition to taking medication, making lifestyle changes will also help to control your blood pressure. These changes include eating a diet that is low in fat and salt, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising at least 30 minutes most days, not smoking, and using alcohol in moderation.
