Here's the simple version: periwinkle contains a compound called vincamine that may gently lower blood pressure on its own. Propranolol already works to bring your blood pressure and heart rate down, so stacking the two together could, in theory, push things a little too far. You might notice things like dizziness, lightheadedness, feeling unusually tired, or a slower than normal heartbeat, especially when you stand up quickly.

I want to be honest about the evidence here. This concern is theoretical, based on how periwinkle behaves in lab and animal studies, not from strong human research. Still, since propranolol affects your heart and blood pressure, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding a periwinkle supplement. Don't change your propranolol on your own.

Periwinkle (Vinca minor) is a flowering plant whose alkaloids are the source of vinpocetine, a compound marketed for memory and brain circulation. Evidence in humans is limited and mixed, and the plant contains potent compounds that can be toxic in larger amounts, so it should be used only with professional guidance. A closely related plant, Madagascar periwinkle, is the source of important cancer chemotherapy drugs but is not safe to use as a home remedy.

What Is Propranolol (Cardiovascular) Used For?

Brand names: Inderal LA, Inderal, Angilol, Syprol, Inderal Injection, Half-Inderal LA, Bedranol SR, Half Beta Prograne, Beta Prograne, Lopranol LA, Slo-Pro, InnoPran XL

This intravenous (IV) form of propranolol is used in hospital or clinical settings to treat dangerous heart rhythm problems. It is generally reserved for life-threatening arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms) or those that occur during anesthesia.

Specific conditions it treats include fast heart rates coming from the upper chambers of the heart (supraventricular tachycardia), certain arrhythmias caused by digitalis toxicity, dangerous ventricular rhythms that haven't responded to other treatments, and fast heart rates caused by excess adrenaline-like substances during surgery.
