Here's the gist: betaxolol is a beta blocker that already works to bring your blood pressure down and slow your heart rate. Periwinkle contains a compound called vincamine that may, on its own, relax blood vessels and lower blood pressure too. Put the two together and those effects could stack up, so your pressure might drop more than expected.

If that happens, you could feel lightheaded, dizzy, unusually tired, or faint when standing up. I'll be honest with you though, this concern is theoretical, based on how the plant behaves rather than solid human studies. Still, periwinkle can be potent, so please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining it with betaxolol.

Periwinkle (Vinca minor) is a flowering plant whose alkaloids are the source of vinpocetine, a compound marketed for memory and brain circulation. Evidence in humans is limited and mixed, and the plant contains potent compounds that can be toxic in larger amounts, so it should be used only with professional guidance. A closely related plant, Madagascar periwinkle, is the source of important cancer chemotherapy drugs but is not safe to use as a home remedy.

What Is Betaxolol Used For?

Brand names: Kerlone, Betoptic

Betaxolol eye drops (including Betoptic S) are used to lower elevated intraocular pressure (pressure inside the eye) in people with chronic open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension (high eye pressure without glaucoma). The eye drops may be used alone or alongside other glaucoma medications.

Betaxolol tablets are used to manage high blood pressure (hypertension). They can be used on their own or combined with other blood pressure medications, particularly thiazide-type diuretics.
