Here's the gist for acebutolol (Sectral): this beta blocker is already working to lower your blood pressure and calm your heart rate. Periwinkle contains a compound called vincamine that may, on its own, relax blood vessels and nudge blood pressure down too. So if you pair the two, the worry is simply an additive effect, your pressure could drop a bit more than expected.

In real life that might show up as feeling lightheaded, dizzy when you stand up, unusually tired, or having a slower pulse. Keep in mind this is a theoretical concern based on how the plant behaves, not strong human studies, so don't panic. Still, before adding periwinkle, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your numbers.

Periwinkle (Vinca minor) is a flowering plant whose alkaloids are the source of vinpocetine, a compound marketed for memory and brain circulation. Evidence in humans is limited and mixed, and the plant contains potent compounds that can be toxic in larger amounts, so it should be used only with professional guidance. A closely related plant, Madagascar periwinkle, is the source of important cancer chemotherapy drugs but is not safe to use as a home remedy.

What Is Acebutolol Used For?

Brand names: Sectral, Rhotral

Acebutolol Hydrochloride capsules are used to manage high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults. They can be used on their own or alongside other blood pressure medications, particularly thiazide-type diuretics.

They are also used to treat ventricular premature beats — extra, out-of-rhythm heartbeats that originate in the lower chambers of the heart. Acebutolol reduces how often these abnormal beats occur, including complex patterns that can be more concerning.
