Here's the gist: periwinkle contains a compound called vincamine that may gently relax and widen blood vessels on its own. Since captopril already lowers your blood pressure, pairing the two could stack their effects together. The result might be blood pressure that drops a little lower than expected, leaving you feeling dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or unsteady when you stand up too quickly.

I want to be honest that this concern is theoretical, based on how these compounds behave in the lab rather than on real cases in people. It's not a reason to panic. Still, if you take captopril and want to try periwinkle or vinpocetine, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first, and watch how you feel.

Periwinkle (Vinca minor) is a flowering plant whose alkaloids are the source of vinpocetine, a compound marketed for memory and brain circulation. Evidence in humans is limited and mixed, and the plant contains potent compounds that can be toxic in larger amounts, so it should be used only with professional guidance. A closely related plant, Madagascar periwinkle, is the source of important cancer chemotherapy drugs but is not safe to use as a home remedy.

What Is Captopril Used For?

Brand names: Capoten, Acepril

Captopril tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure, and left ventricular dysfunction (weakened pumping function of the heart) in stable patients after a heart attack. For the heart attack indication, it helps improve survival and reduces the chance of developing full heart failure.

Captopril tablets are also used to slow the progression of diabetic nephropathy (kidney damage caused by diabetes) in people with type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes who have retinopathy and significant protein in their urine. It reduces the risk of the kidneys failing to the point of needing dialysis or a transplant.
