Phellodendron and Aspirin, Pentazocine

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Phellodendron interacts with whole categories of medication. Aspirin, Pentazocine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Phellodendron in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Aspirin, Pentazocine

Aspirin, Pentazocine falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Phellodendron interacts with.

Theoretically, phellodendron might increase the sedative effects of CNS depressants.
Phellodendron contains berberine. Animal research suggests that berberine may have sedative effects. Theoretically, phellodendron might also have CNS depressants effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Talwin Compound combines aspirin with pentazocine, an opioid pain reliever. The piece that matters here is pentazocine, because it already works on your central nervous system and can make you drowsy, lightheaded, or slow to react. Phellodendron contains berberine, which in animal studies seemed to have a mild calming or sedating effect of its own.

So the theory is simple: stacking the two together could add up to more sedation than you expect. I want to be honest though, this concern is theoretical and based on lab and animal data, not strong human evidence. Still, since pentazocine can already cause sleepiness and dizziness, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and don't drive until you know how you feel.

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

2 of 2

Aspirin, Pentazocine also falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS.

Theoretically, phellodendron might increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Phellodendron contains berberine. In vitro and in vivo research suggest that berberine can inhibit platelet aggregation. Theoretically, phellodendron might also inhibit platelet aggregation.

The combo pill Talwin Compound pairs aspirin with the pain reliever pentazocine. The piece that matters here is the aspirin, since aspirin already works by keeping your platelets from clumping together to form clots. Phellodendron contains berberine, and in lab and animal studies berberine seems to do something similar, nudging platelets to stick together less.

Stack the two, and in theory you could bruise more easily or bleed a little longer than usual, like nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or stomach upset. I want to be honest though: this is a theoretical concern based only on test-tube and animal data, not real patient reports. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aspirin, Pentazocine page

“Talwin Compound pairs pentazocine, an opioid painkiller, with aspirin, and I read its supplement list with more concern than most. The great majority of entries do one of two things: raise the bleeding risk that aspirin already carries, or deepen the sedation pentazocine causes.”

About Phellodendron

What is Phellodendron?

Phellodendron
  • Digestive complaints and diarrhea
  • Inflammation and joint discomfort
  • Stress and weight management (in combination products)
  • Skin conditions (topical, traditional)
  • Antimicrobial support

Phellodendron is a traditional Chinese medicine bark (Huang Bai) that contains berberine and other plant compounds with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity in lab studies. Human evidence for most uses is limited, and it is often sold in combination with other herbs, making its individual effects hard to judge. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
