Here's the basic idea: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to help break down clomipramine. Phellodendron contains berberine, which lab studies and some early human research suggest can slow that enzyme down. If clomipramine clears more slowly, levels in your blood could creep up, and that may mean more of the usual side effects, things like dry mouth, constipation, drowsiness, dizziness, or a faster heartbeat.

I want to be honest about how strong this evidence is. Right now it's mostly theoretical, based on how berberine behaves, not on solid studies with people taking both together. Still, since clomipramine already needs careful dosing, I'd run it by your pharmacist or doctor before adding phellodendron rather than guessing on your own.

Here's the gist: Phellodendron contains berberine, and early research hints that berberine may slow down a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. Phellodendron contains berberine, which lab and early human studies suggest can slow that enzyme down a bit. If clomipramine clears more slowly, more of it can linger in your system, which could nudge up its usual side effects, things like dry mouth, constipation, drowsiness, dizziness, a racing heart, or feeling foggy.

I'll be honest, this concern is theoretical and based on how these compounds behave, not on real cases. Still, since clomipramine is a sensitive antidepressant where dose matters, I'd loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding phellodendron rather than starting or stopping anything on your own.

Clomipramine — sold as Anafranil and under the generic name Clomipramine Hydrochloride — is approved to treat obsessions and compulsions in people with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). This includes adults and children/adolescents ages 10 to 17.

To qualify for treatment, the obsessions or compulsions must cause significant distress, take up a lot of time, or noticeably interfere with work, school, or social life.
