Enalapril Maleate falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Phellodendron interacts with.

Theoretically, phellodendron might have additive effects with antihypertensive drugs.
Phellodendron contains berberine. Animal research suggests that berberine can have hypotensive effects. Also, a clinical study suggests that taking berberine in combination with amlodipine can lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure when compared with amlodipine alone. Theoretically, phellodendron might also reduce blood pressure.

Here's the gist: Phellodendron contains berberine, and there are hints from animal studies (and one small human study pairing berberine with a blood pressure drug) that it may gently nudge blood pressure downward on its own. Enalapril (Vasotec, Epaned) already lowers your blood pressure, so stacking the two together could, in theory, push it down a little more than expected.

I want to be honest about the strength here: this is a theoretical concern based on how these compounds behave, not solid proof. If your blood pressure dropped too far, you might feel lightheaded, dizzy, or tired, especially when standing up quickly. It's nothing to panic over, but please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and keep an eye on your readings if you do.

What Is Enalapril Used For?

Brand names: Vasotec, Epaned

Enalapril is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children older than one month, and to treat symptomatic heart failure. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack.

It is also used for asymptomatic left ventricular dysfunction — when the heart's pumping ability is reduced but the person doesn't yet have obvious heart failure symptoms — to slow the progression to overt heart failure and reduce hospitalizations. Enalapril maleate oral solution (including Epaned) and enalapril maleate tablets (including Vasotec) share these three approved uses.
