Fluphenazine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Phellodendron interacts with.

Theoretically, phellodendron might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
Phellodendron contains berberine. In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence show that berberine can inhibit CYP2D6. Theoretically, phellodendron might also inhibit CYP2D6.

Here's the simple version: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to clear fluphenazine out of your system. Phellodendron contains berberine, which lab studies and some early human data suggest can slow that same enzyme down. If the enzyme works slower, fluphenazine could build up a bit more than expected.

For an antipsychotic like this, higher levels can mean more drowsiness, dizziness, low blood pressure when you stand up, restlessness, or stiff, shaky muscle movements. I want to be honest though, this concern is theoretical and based mostly on lab work, not strong real-world studies. Still, since this medication needs careful dosing, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Fluphenazine Used For?

Brand names: Prolixin, Permitil, Fluphenazine

Fluphenazine hydrochloride tablets and oral solution are indicated for the management of psychotic disorders. Fluphenazine Hydrochloride Injection is also used for psychotic disorders and can bridge patients to oral therapy.

Fluphenazine Decanoate Injection is a long-acting form specifically intended for patients who need extended antipsychotic treatment — for example, those with chronic schizophrenia who benefit from a single injection that can last up to four weeks or longer. It is not approved for behavioral problems related to intellectual disability, and it is not approved for dementia-related psychosis in elderly patients.
