These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Phellodendron interacts with whole categories of medication. Ibuprofen lysine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Phellodendron in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Ibuprofen lysine
Ibuprofen lysine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Phellodendron interacts with.
Phellodendron contains berberine. Preliminary clinical research shows that berberine can inhibit CYP2C9. Theoretically, phellodendron might also inhibit CYP2C9.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the basic idea. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2C9 to break down ibuprofen and clear it from your body. Phellodendron contains berberine, which early research suggests can slow that enzyme down. If the enzyme works slower, ibuprofen may hang around longer and build up a bit, which could nudge up the usual NSAID side effects like stomach upset, heartburn, a higher risk of stomach irritation or bleeding, and added strain on the kidneys.
I'll be honest with you though, this is theoretical for now, based on how these compounds behave rather than real-world reports. For most short-term, occasional ibuprofen use it's unlikely to be a big deal. Still, since concentrated supplement doses are stronger than food amounts, run it past your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if you take ibuprofen regularly.

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
2 of 2Ibuprofen lysine also falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS.
Phellodendron contains berberine. In vitro and in vivo research suggest that berberine can inhibit platelet aggregation. Theoretically, phellodendron might also inhibit platelet aggregation.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: ibuprofen lysine is just a fast-dissolving form of ibuprofen, an NSAID. Like all NSAIDs, it already nudges your blood toward bleeding a little by making platelets stickier and less able to clump and form clots. Phellodendron contains berberine, which lab and animal studies suggest may also slow down platelets. Stack the two together and, in theory, you could bruise more easily or bleed a bit longer from cuts, your gums, or your stomach.
I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This concern comes only from test-tube and animal research, not from real human cases, so it's more of a caution than a proven problem. Still, if you take phellodendron with ibuprofen regularly, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor first, especially if you're already on a blood thinner.

“Ibuprofen lysine (NeoProfen) is an injectable form of the NSAID ibuprofen, and this list warrants real attention, starting with its six major entries. The dominant pattern is bleeding: 202 of the 268 ingredients on file can thin the blood or slow clotting, which stacks on an NSAID's own tendency to irritate the stomach and blunt platel…”

About Phellodendron
What is Phellodendron?
- Digestive complaints and diarrhea
- Inflammation and joint discomfort
- Stress and weight management (in combination products)
- Skin conditions (topical, traditional)
- Antimicrobial support
Phellodendron is a traditional Chinese medicine bark (Huang Bai) that contains berberine and other plant compounds with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity in lab studies. Human evidence for most uses is limited, and it is often sold in combination with other herbs, making its individual effects hard to judge. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Ibuprofen
What Is Ibuprofen Used For?
Brand name: NeoProfen
Oral ibuprofen products (tablets, coated tablets, and liquid-filled capsules) are used to temporarily relieve minor aches and pains from headache, backache, toothache, muscular aches, menstrual cramps, minor arthritis pain, and the common cold, and to temporarily reduce fever. The oral prescription tablet (Ibu) is also indicated for the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, mild to moderate pain, and primary dysmenorrhea (painful periods).
Caldolor, an intravenous (IV) form, is approved for adults and children 3 months and older to manage mild to moderate pain, to manage moderate to severe pain alongside opioid pain medicines, and to reduce fever. A separate intravenous solution, Ibuprofen Lysine, is used specifically in premature infants to close a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) — an abnormal blood vessel connection near the heart — when standard medical management has not worked.
