Phellodendron contains berberine. Clinical research shows that berberine may lower blood glucose levels. Theoretically, phellodendron might also lower blood glucose levels.

Here's the thing to keep in mind if you're pairing Phellodendron with your Basaglar or Semglee. This bark contains berberine, and some research suggests berberine can nudge blood sugar down on its own. Insulin glargine already lowers your blood sugar, so stacking the two could push your numbers lower than you intend. That raises the chance of a low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) episode, with signs like shakiness, sweating, dizziness, confusion, or feeling unusually hungry.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical concern based on how berberine works, not something proven in people taking the two together. Still, with insulin you don't want surprises. If you decide to use Phellodendron, check your glucose more closely and chat with your pharmacist or doctor first, rather than adjusting your insulin on your own.

What Is Insulin Glargine (rDNA origin) Injection Used For?

Brand names: Basaglar, Lusduna, Semglee

Insulin glargine is used to improve glycemic control (blood sugar management) in adults and pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus, and in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is a long-acting basal insulin, meaning it works gradually over the course of the day to keep blood sugar steady.

Insulin glargine is not recommended for treating diabetic ketoacidosis (a serious complication where the blood becomes dangerously acidic).
