Canagliflozin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Phellodendron interacts with.

Theoretically, phellodendron may increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Phellodendron contains berberine. Clinical research shows that berberine may lower blood glucose levels. Theoretically, phellodendron might also lower blood glucose levels.

Here's the gist: Phellodendron contains berberine, which some studies suggest can nudge blood sugar a little lower on its own. Since canagliflozin (Invokana) is already working to lower your blood sugar, stacking the two together could in theory push your numbers down more than expected, raising the chance of hypoglycemia (shakiness, sweating, dizziness, confusion).

I want to be straight with you, though: this concern is mostly theoretical and based on how these compounds behave, not on strong studies of the two used together. It's not about Invokana building up in your body. Still, if you decide to use Phellodendron, it's smart to watch your blood sugar a bit more closely and check in with your pharmacist or doctor first. Don't change your Invokana on your own.

Phellodendron is a traditional Chinese medicine bark (Huang Bai) that contains berberine and other plant compounds with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity in lab studies. Human evidence for most uses is limited, and it is often sold in combination with other herbs, making its individual effects hard to judge. What Is Canagliflozin Used For?

Brand name: Invokana

Canagliflozin (sold as Invokana tablets) is used in people with type 2 diabetes. Alongside diet and exercise, it helps control blood sugar in adults and children aged 10 and older.

In adults with type 2 diabetes, Invokana is also used to lower the risk of major cardiovascular events (cardiovascular death, nonfatal heart attack and nonfatal stroke) when established cardiovascular disease is present. It is also used to lower the risk of end-stage kidney disease, doubling of serum creatinine, cardiovascular death and hospitalization for heart failure in people with diabetic nephropathy (diabetes-related kidney disease) and heavy albuminuria (protein in the urine).
