Soy and Canagliflozin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Canagliflozin

Canagliflozin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Soy interacts with.

Soy can lower blood glucose and have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs.
Clinical research shows that whole soy diets and soy-based meals reduce fasting glucose levels in diabetic and non-diabetic individuals. Also, individuals following a soy-based meal replacement plan seem to require lower doses of sulfonylureas and metformin to manage blood glucose levels when compared with individuals following a diet plan recommended by the American Diabetes Association.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: soy itself can gently nudge your blood sugar downward. Canagliflozin (Invokana) is already working to lower your glucose by helping you pass extra sugar in your urine. Put the two together and the effects can stack, so your blood sugar may run lower than expected. The good news is this isn't about soy changing how your body processes the drug, it's just two things pushing in the same direction.

For most people, soy in normal foods like tofu, edamame, or soy milk is unlikely to cause trouble, and high-quality research backs that up. Concentrated soy supplements or a soy-heavy meal-replacement plan are where you'd watch more closely. Keep an eye out for low blood sugar signs (shakiness, sweating, dizziness), check your readings, and chat with your pharmacist or doctor before making any big diet changes.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Canagliflozin page

“Canagliflozin (Invokana) lowers blood sugar, and that is precisely why this list deserves genuine care. Nearly every ingredient on it works on glucose one way or another: most can push it too low when stacked with the drug, while a few, niacin among them, raise it and work against the medicine.”

About Soy

What is Soy?

  • Menopause symptoms (hot flashes)
  • Heart and cholesterol health
  • Bone health
  • Plant-based protein source
  • General nutrition

Soy is a nutritious bean that is a staple food and a popular source of plant protein and isoflavones. Eating soy foods as part of a balanced diet is generally considered safe for most people, and there is moderate evidence it may modestly help cholesterol and some menopause symptoms, though results vary. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated soy isoflavone supplements, especially if you have a history of hormone-sensitive conditions.
