Why this applies to Canagliflozin

Canagliflozin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Turmeric interacts with.

Theoretically, taking turmeric with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Animal research and case reports suggest that curcumin, a turmeric constituent, can reduce blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes. Furthermore, clinical research in adults with type 2 diabetes shows that taking curcumin 475 mg daily for 10 days prior to taking glyburide 5 mg decreased postprandial glucose levels for up to 24 hours when compared with glyburide alone, despite the lack of a significant pharmacokinetic interaction. Other clinical studies in patients with diabetes show that taking curcumin daily can reduce blood glucose levels when compared with placebo.

Here's the gist with Invokana (canagliflozin) and turmeric: this isn't about turmeric changing how your body processes the drug. Instead, concentrated curcumin supplements may have a mild blood-sugar-lowering effect of their own. Stack that on top of canagliflozin, which already pulls sugar out through your urine, and your levels could dip a little lower than expected.

To be fair, the evidence here is on the lighter side, and the bigger study used a different diabetes pill, not canagliflozin specifically. Cooking with turmeric in food is very unlikely to matter. With daily curcumin capsules, just keep an eye out for shaky, sweaty, dizzy, or lightheaded feelings that signal low blood sugar. Before adding a turmeric supplement, run it by your pharmacist or doctor so they can help you monitor.

About Canagliflozin

What Is Canagliflozin Used For?

Brand name: Invokana

Invokana (canagliflozin) is used alongside diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 and older with type 2 diabetes. It is not for type 1 diabetes.

In adults with type 2 diabetes, Invokana is also used to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular death in those with established cardiovascular disease, and to reduce the risk of serious kidney complications — including end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, and hospitalization for heart failure — in those with diabetic kidney disease and high levels of protein in the urine.
