Theoretically, phellodendron might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
Phellodendron contains berberine. Preliminary clinical research shows that berberine can inhibit CYP2C9. Theoretically, phellodendron might also inhibit CYP2C9.

Here's the basic idea with Zileuton (Zyflo) and Phellodendron. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2C9 to help clear Zileuton from your body. Phellodendron contains berberine, which lab and early human research suggests can slow that enzyme down. If the enzyme works slower, more Zileuton could linger in your bloodstream than expected.

In real terms, that might mean a bit more chance of Zileuton's usual side effects, such as upper stomach discomfort, nausea, or headache, and possibly more strain on the liver (Zileuton already needs liver monitoring). I want to be honest though: this is theoretical and based on how these compounds behave, not on solid proof in people. Don't change anything on your own. Just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Phellodendron contains berberine. In vitro research and preliminary clinical research show that berberine moderately inhibits CYP3A4. Theoretically, phellodendron might also inhibit CYP3A4.

Here's the gist with Zileuton and phellodendron. This herb's bark contains berberine, and in lab and early human studies berberine appears to slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Zileuton is partly handled by that same enzyme, so on paper the herb could let a bit more Zileuton linger in your blood than usual.

If that happened, you might notice Zileuton's known side effects a little more, things like stomach upset, headache, or nausea. I'll be honest though: this is a theoretical concern based on how the chemistry works, not on real cases of harm. Zileuton already needs liver monitoring, so before you add phellodendron, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Phellodendron is a traditional Chinese medicine bark (Huang Bai) that contains berberine and other plant compounds with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity in lab studies. Human evidence for most uses is limited, and it is often sold in combination with other herbs, making its individual effects hard to judge. About Zileuton

What Is Zileuton Used For?

Brand names: Zyflo, Zyflo CR

Zileuton is used for the ongoing prevention and treatment of asthma in adults and adolescents aged 12 and older. It is a maintenance medicine — meaning it is taken regularly to keep asthma under control, not to stop an asthma attack once it has started.

Zyflo (the tablet form) and zileuton extended-release tablets are both approved for this same purpose. Neither form should be used to treat a sudden asthma attack. However, both can be continued during a flare-up of asthma while you also use your rescue inhaler.
