Fostamatinib falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Picrorhiza interacts with.

Picrorhiza seems to have immunostimulating activity. Theoretically, picrorhiza may interfere with immunosuppressant therapy. Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), and other corticosteroids (glucocorticoids).

Here's the thinking behind this pairing. Picrorhiza appears to give the immune system a little nudge to be more active, at least in lab dishes and animals. Fostamatinib works in the opposite direction, calming the immune attack on your platelets so your platelet count can recover. So in theory, taking picrorhiza alongside it could work against what the medicine is trying to do.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It's based on early lab and animal data, not on people taking these two together, so it's more of a caution than a proven problem. If picrorhiza did blunt your treatment, the worry would be your platelets drifting back down, meaning more easy bruising or bleeding. Please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.

What Is Fostamatinib Used For?

Brand name: Tavalisse

Tavalisse (fostamatinib) is used to treat thrombocytopenia — dangerously low platelet counts — in adults with chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). It is specifically for people whose platelet counts have not improved enough with at least one earlier ITP treatment.

The goal is to raise platelet counts high enough to reduce the risk of serious bleeding. If platelet counts do not respond sufficiently after 12 weeks, the medication is typically stopped.
