Simeprevir Sodium falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Polypodium Leucotomos interacts with.

Theoretically, Polypodium leucotomos might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro and animal research suggests that Polypodium leucotomos can decrease the metabolism of midazolam by a mechanism possibly related to the inhibition of CYP3A4. However, a small study in humans suggests that taking Polypodium leucotomos with midazolam does not affect the metabolism of midazolam.

Here's the basic idea: your hepatitis C medicine Olysio (simeprevir) is cleared from your body partly by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. There's a theory that Polypodium leucotomos might slow that enzyme down a little. If that happened, simeprevir could build up slightly, which in turn could nudge up side effects like rash, itching, or extra sun sensitivity (something simeprevir is already known for).

The honest truth, though, is that this concern is very weak. It comes mostly from lab and animal studies, and a small human study actually showed no real effect on a similar CYP3A4 drug. So I wouldn't lose sleep here, but since hepatitis C treatment matters, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up before adding this fern extract.

What Is Simeprevir Used For?

Brand name: Olysio

  • Simeprevir is used along with ribavirin (Copegus, Rebetol) and peginterferon alfa (Pegasys) to treat chronic hepatitis C (an ongoing viral infection that damages the liver). Simeprevir is in a class of medications called protease inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the body. Simeprevir may not prevent the spread of hepatitis C to other people.
