ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Protriptyline
Protriptyline falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Poria Mushroom interacts with.
In animal research, poria mushroom essential oil reduces acetylcholinesterase activity. This interaction has not been shown in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with protriptyline (Vivactil). Like other tricyclic antidepressants, it has built-in anticholinergic activity, which is why it can cause dry mouth, constipation, blurry vision, and trouble urinating. Poria mushroom has shown, in animal studies only, a tendency to raise acetylcholine levels by slowing the enzyme that breaks it down. In theory, that could nudge against protriptyline's drying effects.
In plain terms, this is a theoretical tug-of-war that has never been demonstrated in people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since protriptyline needs steady dosing to work well, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Poria, especially if you notice any change in how your medication feels.

“Protriptyline (Vivactil) is an older tricyclic antidepressant, and I read its supplement list with genuine care because so much of it piles onto what the drug already does. Four of the 93 ingredients on file rate major, and those deserve your attention before anything else.”

About Poria Mushroom
What is Poria Mushroom?
- Fluid retention and swelling
- Digestive complaints
- Sleep and calming support
- General wellness and immune support
- Urinary support
Poria mushroom (Fu Ling) is a fungus long used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, mainly as a mild diuretic and digestive and calming aid. Modern scientific evidence in humans is very limited, so its benefits are not well proven. It is generally considered well tolerated, but talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to a lack of safety data.
