Why this applies to Omeprazole

Omeprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES — the group Propolis interacts with.

Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C19.
In vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP2C19. However, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP2C19 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that inhibit CYP2C19 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for omeprazole (Prilosec). Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2C19 to break omeprazole down. In a test tube, propolis can slow that enzyme. If that happened in your body, omeprazole could linger a bit longer and build up, which in theory might mean slightly stronger effects or more side effects like headache, nausea, gas, or loose stools.

The reassuring part: this is only lab and animal data, not something seen in real people. Propolis doesn't get absorbed well, so it likely never reaches the liver in amounts that matter, especially at normal amounts. If you take concentrated, high-dose propolis daily, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

Here's the basic idea: omeprazole gets cleared from your body partly by a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. In a test tube, propolis can slow that enzyme down. If that slowdown happened in real life, omeprazole could hang around a little longer and have a slightly stronger effect, possibly with more side effects like headache, stomach upset, or diarrhea.

The reassuring part: this is only theory based on lab dishes. When researchers gave propolis to animals, they didn't see a real change, likely because not much propolis actually reaches the bloodstream. It's never been reported in people. Some in vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP3A4; however, other in vitro research shows that propolis has no effect on CYP3A4 activity. Furthermore, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP3A4 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that might in inhibit CYP3A4 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist: your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear omeprazole (Prilosec). In a test tube, some propolis compounds seem to slow that enzyme down, which could in theory let omeprazole build up a bit and lead to stronger effects like headache, stomach upset, or diarrhea. I want to be honest with you though, this is a pretty weak concern. The lab studies disagree with each other, animal studies didn't show a real effect, and nothing like this has been reported in actual people.

For everyday propolis use, I wouldn't lose sleep over it. If you're taking large, concentrated doses, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads up so they can keep an eye on things.

Propolis is a natural, resin-like substance made by bees that has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties in lab studies. Early research suggests it may help with cold sores, mouth sores, and minor wounds, but high-quality evidence is limited for most uses. It is generally well tolerated, but allergic reactions can occur, especially in people allergic to bee products.

About Omeprazole

What Is Omeprazole Used For?

Brand names: Prilosec, Zegerid, Losec

Omeprazole is used to treat a range of conditions where stomach acid causes problems. These include heartburn and acid reflux (GERD), erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from acid), and stomach or duodenal ulcers. It can also be used alongside antibiotics to help get rid of an H. pylori infection — a bacteria that causes ulcers.

In more serious cases, omeprazole is used to manage conditions where the stomach produces far too much acid, such as pathologic hypersecretory conditions (rare medical disorders that cause extreme acid overproduction). It is approved for adults and children one year of age and older for GERD and erosive esophagitis.
