Amantadine falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Purple Nut Sedge interacts with.

In vitro, purple nut sedge dose-dependently inhibits acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Theoretically, concurrent use of anticholinergic drugs and purple nut sedge might decrease the effectiveness of purple nut sedge or the anticholinergic agent.
Some anticholinergic drugs include atropine, benztropine (Cogentin), biperiden (Akineton), procyclidine (Kemadrin), and trihexyphenidyl (Artane).

Here's the gist for amantadine. Part of how amantadine helps with Parkinson's and certain movement side effects is through a mild anticholinergic action, meaning it slightly dampens a brain chemical called acetylcholine. Purple nut sedge, at least in test-tube studies, seems to do the opposite by blocking the enzyme that breaks acetylcholine down, which leaves more of it around. So in theory the two could work against each other, possibly making your amantadine feel a little less effective or blunting the benefit of the herb.

Keep this in perspective though. This is based only on lab work, not real people, so we honestly don't know if it matters in everyday life. If you're considering purple nut sedge, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first before adding it.

What Is Amantadine Used For?

Brand names: Symmetrel, Gocovri, Osmolex ER

Amantadine capsules, tablets, and oral solution are used to prevent or treat uncomplicated respiratory illness caused by influenza A virus strains. They are also used in the treatment of parkinsonism and drug-induced extrapyramidal reactions (movement problems caused by certain medications).

Gocovri (an extended-release amantadine capsule) has two specific approved uses: treating dyskinesia (uncontrolled, involuntary movements) in people with Parkinson's disease who are taking levodopa-based therapy, and as an add-on treatment to levodopa/carbidopa for people experiencing "off" episodes (periods when Parkinson's symptoms return or worsen).
