Clozapine falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Purple Nut Sedge interacts with.

In vitro, purple nut sedge dose-dependently inhibits acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Theoretically, concurrent use of anticholinergic drugs and purple nut sedge might decrease the effectiveness of purple nut sedge or the anticholinergic agent.
Some anticholinergic drugs include atropine, benztropine (Cogentin), biperiden (Akineton), procyclidine (Kemadrin), and trihexyphenidyl (Artane).

Here's the gist for clozapine: it has its own anticholinergic (drying) effects, like a dry mouth, blurry vision, constipation, and trouble emptying the bladder. Purple nut sedge, in lab tests only, seems to do the opposite by blocking an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase, which leaves more acetylcholine around. In theory those two could work against each other, slightly blunting the supplement or your clozapine.

I want to be honest with you, though: this is based on test-tube and animal research, not real people taking both together, so the real-world effect is uncertain and probably small. Still, clozapine is a serious medication that needs close monitoring, so please check with your prescriber or pharmacist before adding purple nut sedge rather than deciding on your own.

What Is Clozapine Used For?

Clozapine is used for two specific situations. First, it is prescribed for people with severe schizophrenia who have already tried other antipsychotic medications and have not gotten adequate relief. It is reserved for this group because of its serious risks.

Second, clozapine is used to lower the chances of repeated suicidal behavior in people with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder who are considered to be at ongoing, chronic risk. It is not a first-choice medication — it is used when the need is serious and other options have fallen short.
