Desipramine falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Purple Nut Sedge interacts with.

In vitro, purple nut sedge dose-dependently inhibits acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Theoretically, concurrent use of anticholinergic drugs and purple nut sedge might decrease the effectiveness of purple nut sedge or the anticholinergic agent.
Some anticholinergic drugs include atropine, benztropine (Cogentin), biperiden (Akineton), procyclidine (Kemadrin), and trihexyphenidyl (Artane).

Here's the gist for desipramine: like many tricyclic antidepressants, it has anticholinergic (drying) effects, meaning it dampens a brain and body messenger called acetylcholine. Purple nut sedge, on the other hand, has been shown in test-tube studies to do the opposite, blocking the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, which would tend to raise its levels. So the two may pull against each other and slightly blunt each other's effects.

This is very weak, theoretical evidence, only from lab and animal studies, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. In practice you're unlikely to notice a big change, but if you do try purple nut sedge, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on how your desipramine is working.

What Is Desipramine Used For?

Brand names: Norpramin, Desipramine, Pertofrane

Desipramine hydrochloride tablets — sold under the brand names Norpramin, Desipramine HCL, and Desipramine Hydrochloride — are FDA-approved for the treatment of depression in adults. Norpramin tablets and the generic formulations share this same approved indication.

Desipramine tablets are not approved for use in children. Adolescents and elderly patients may be prescribed it in certain circumstances, but at lower doses and under close supervision.
