In vitro, purple nut sedge dose-dependently inhibits acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Theoretically, concurrent use of anticholinergic drugs and purple nut sedge might decrease the effectiveness of purple nut sedge or the anticholinergic agent.
Some anticholinergic drugs include atropine, benztropine (Cogentin), biperiden (Akineton), procyclidine (Kemadrin), and trihexyphenidyl (Artane).

Here's the gist for pimozide (Orap). In lab studies only, purple nut sedge seems to block an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase, which is roughly the opposite of what mild anticholinergic medicines do. Pimozide can have some anticholinergic-type effects (think dry mouth, blurry vision, constipation, trouble urinating), so in theory the two could partly cancel each other out, possibly nudging those effects in either direction.

I want to be honest with you: this is theoretical, based on test-tube and animal work, not real people. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it, especially since culinary or occasional use is unlikely to matter much. The bigger picture is that pimozide is a sensitive medicine for the heart and overall, so before adding any supplement, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Pimozide Used For?

Brand name: Orap

Pimozide tablets are used to suppress motor tics (involuntary movements) and phonic tics (involuntary sounds or words) in people with Tourette's Disorder. It is reserved for patients whose daily life or development is severely affected by their tics — it is not intended as a first-line treatment, and it is not used for tics that are mild or mainly cosmetic concerns.

Pimozide is not meant for tics caused by other conditions or medications, and it should not be used for simple tics unrelated to Tourette's Disorder.
