Theoretically, taking quercetin with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.

Quercetin can modestly decrease blood pressure in people with mild hypertension. Theoretically, it might have additive blood pressure lowering effects when used with antihypertensive drugs.

Here's the short version: quercetin can gently nudge blood pressure down on its own, and propranolol already lowers blood pressure and slows the heart. Put them together and those effects could add up a little. The good news is this is mostly theoretical, based on modest, lower-quality studies, so it's not a strong or guaranteed interaction.

Keep in mind propranolol oral solution (Hemangeol) is usually given to babies for hemangiomas. If a child on it were also given quercetin, the things to watch for would be signs of pressure dropping too low or the heart rate slowing too much: sluggishness, poor feeding, cool or pale skin, or fewer wet diapers. Food amounts of quercetin are very unlikely to matter, but please check with your pediatrician or pharmacist before adding any supplement.

Propranolol Hydrochloride also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2D6 substrates.

In vitro research show that quercetin inhibits CYP2D6. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the situation with quercetin and propranolol. Your body clears propranolol partly through a liver enzyme called CYP2D6. In test-tube studies, quercetin appears to slow that enzyme down. If that held true in people, less propranolol would be broken down, so more of it could build up in the body. Since propranolol is an active drug (not one that needs activating), that would mean a stronger beta-blocker effect.

For an infant on Hemangeol, that could theoretically look like a slower heart rate, lower blood pressure, sleepiness, or low blood sugar. That said, this is only seen in lab studies and hasn't been shown in real patients. Still, it's worth running any quercetin supplement past your pediatrician or pharmacist first.

What Is Propranolol (Infantile Hemangioma) Used For?

Brand name: Hemangeol

This intravenous (IV) form of propranolol is used in hospital settings to treat serious, life-threatening heart rhythm problems. It works on several types of abnormal rhythms, including those that happen during anesthesia or are caused by drug toxicity.

Specific uses include fast heart rhythms coming from the upper chambers of the heart (supraventricular tachycardia), dangerous rhythms caused by too much digitalis in the body, and certain fast rhythms triggered by excess stress hormones (catecholamines) during surgery.
