Budesonide, Formoterol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Rabdosia Rubescens interacts with.

In vitro research shows that oridonin, a constituent of Rabdosia rubescens, induces cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) enzyme. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for a decrease in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9 in patients taking Rabdosia rubescens. Some drugs metabolized by CYP2C9 include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as diclofenac (Cataflam, Voltaren), ibuprofen (Motrin), meloxicam (Mobic), and piroxicam (Feldene); celecoxib (Celebrex); amitriptyline (Elavil); warfarin (Coumadin); glipizide (Glucotrol); losartan (Cozaar); and others.

Here's the honest picture with Symbicort (budesonide and formoterol). The concern on file is that a compound in Rabdosia rubescens called oridonin may speed up a liver enzyme (CYP2C9). When an enzyme is sped up, drugs cleared through it can get broken down faster, which can mean less of the drug in your body.

Two things keep this very low on my worry list. First, Symbicort is inhaled, so most of the dose acts right in your lungs and far less goes through your liver. Second, this is only test-tube data, with nothing seen in real people. In theory you could notice slightly weaker asthma or COPD control, but that's unlikely. Still, if you try this herb, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor first.
