Why this applies to Irbesartan

Irbesartan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Rabdosia Rubescens interacts with.

In vitro research shows that oridonin, a constituent of Rabdosia rubescens, induces cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) enzyme. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for a decrease in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9 in patients taking Rabdosia rubescens. Some drugs metabolized by CYP2C9 include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as diclofenac (Cataflam, Voltaren), ibuprofen (Motrin), meloxicam (Mobic), and piroxicam (Feldene); celecoxib (Celebrex); amitriptyline (Elavil); warfarin (Coumadin); glipizide (Glucotrol); losartan (Cozaar); and others.

Here's the gist for irbesartan (Avapro): your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2C9 to help process this blood pressure medicine. Lab studies suggest a compound in Rabdosia rubescens (oridonin) may speed that enzyme up. If that happened in real life, your body could clear irbesartan a little faster, which might soften its effect and let your blood pressure creep back up.

The reassuring part: this is only test-tube research, and it has never been reported in actual people, so I'd file it as a minor, theoretical concern rather than something to lose sleep over. Still, if you decide to try this herb, it's smart to keep an eye on your blood pressure at home and check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Irbesartan Used For?

Brand names: Avapro, Aprovel

Irbesartan tablets — sold as the brand Avapro and as generic irbesartan — are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Bringing blood pressure down lowers the risk of serious events like stroke and heart attack. It can be used alone or alongside other blood pressure medicines.

Irbesartan tablets (including Avapro) are also used to treat diabetic nephropathy — kidney disease caused by diabetes — in people who have type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and signs of kidney damage. In this group, it helps slow how quickly the kidney disease gets worse.
