Why this applies to Tazemetostat Hydrobromide

Tazemetostat Hydrobromide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Rabdosia Rubescens interacts with.

In vitro research shows that oridonin, a constituent of Rabdosia rubescens, induces cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzyme. Also, in an animal model, oridonin induces a gene homologous to CYP3A4. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for a decrease in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking Rabdosia rubescens. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 that might be affected are some benzodiazepines such as alprazolam (Xanax), diazepam (Valium), midazolam (Versed), triazolam (Halcion); calcium channel blockers such as amlodipine (Norvasc), diltiazem (Cardizem, Dilacor, others), felodipine (Plendil), verapamil (Calan, Verelan, others); cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune); some HIV antivirals such as indinavir (Crixivan), ritonavir (Norvir), saquinavir (Fortovase, Invirase); some HMG CoA reductase inhibitors such as atorvastatin (Lipitor), lovastatin (Mevacor); some macrolide antibiotics such as erythromycin and clarithromycin (Biaxin); quinidine; and many others.

Here's the concern with pairing this herb with Tazverik (tazemetostat). Your body clears tazemetostat using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab studies suggest a compound in Rabdosia rubescens (oridonin) may speed up that enzyme. If it does, your body could break down tazemetostat faster, leaving less of it to fight your cancer. With a cancer treatment, weaker drug levels could mean it doesn't work as well as it should, and that's a serious thing to risk.

I want to be honest about the evidence though: this is only seen in test-tube and animal studies, never confirmed in people. Still, because tazemetostat is treating cancer, I'd play it safe. Please check with your oncologist or pharmacist before adding this supplement.

About Tazemetostat

What Is Tazemetostat Used For?

Brand name: Tazverik

Tazverik (tazemetostat) tablets are used to treat adults and patients aged 16 and older with metastatic or locally advanced epithelioid sarcoma (a rare soft-tissue cancer) that cannot be completely removed by surgery.

Tazverik is also used in adults with relapsed or refractory follicular lymphoma — meaning the lymphoma has come back or stopped responding to treatment — either when the tumor carries a specific EZH2 gene mutation (confirmed by an FDA-approved test) after at least two prior treatments, or when there are no other satisfactory treatment options. Both uses were approved based on response rates, and continued approval may depend on results from ongoing confirmatory studies.
