Reishi Mushroom and Cangrelor

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Cangrelor

Cangrelor falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Reishi Mushroom interacts with.

Theoretically, high doses of reishi mushroom might increase the risk of bleeding.
A dose of 1.5 grams daily of reishi mushroom does not seem to decrease platelet aggregation, but a higher dose of 3 grams daily does.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know about Cangrelor (Kengreal): it's a powerful IV blood thinner (an antiplatelet drug) given in the hospital, usually during a procedure to open up the heart's arteries. It already keeps your platelets from clumping, so bleeding risk is the main thing your care team watches.

Reishi mushroom may have a mild blood-thinning effect of its own, but only at higher doses. Lab work suggests about 3 grams a day might lower platelet stickiness, while 1.5 grams a day didn't seem to. Stacked on top of Cangrelor, that could theoretically add to bleeding (more bruising, oozing, or a longer bleeding time). This is weak evidence based on lab studies, so don't panic. Since Cangrelor is given in a hospital, just tell your team about any reishi you take so they can decide what's safe.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Cangrelor page

“Cangrelor (Kengreal) is an antiplatelet given by IV during heart procedures such as stenting, and I treat its supplement list with genuine care. All 202 ingredients on it touch blood clotting, and nearly every one adds to the bleeding risk cangrelor creates by design.”

About Reishi Mushroom

What is Reishi Mushroom?

Reishi Mushroom
  • Immune support
  • Fatigue and general well-being
  • Stress and sleep
  • Inflammation
  • Heart and cholesterol health

Reishi is a traditional Asian mushroom widely used to support the immune system and overall wellness. Human evidence for most of its claimed benefits is limited or low-quality, so it should not replace proven treatments. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or take other medicines.
