Methylprednisolone falls under CORTICOSTEROIDS — the group Rhubarb interacts with.

Theoretically, frequent and high doses of rhubarb might increase the risk of hypokalemia when taken with corticosteroids.

Here's the gist for methylprednisolone (Medrol): this steroid can lower your body's potassium over time. Rhubarb root, when used as a strong laxative, can also drain potassium because frequent loose stools flush minerals out. Stack the two and the worry is that your potassium could dip a little lower than it should.

Keep in mind this is a theoretical concern based on how each one works, not something proven in studies, and it really only applies to heavy, regular use of concentrated rhubarb root supplements. Eating rhubarb stalks in a pie or crumble is not the issue here. Low potassium can show up as muscle cramps, weakness, or an irregular heartbeat. If you plan to use rhubarb supplements while on this steroid, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Methylprednisolone Used For?

Brand names: Medrol, Medrol Dosepak

Methylprednisolone tablets (Medrol, Methylpred DP) are used to treat a broad set of conditions including endocrine disorders, rheumatic and joint conditions, autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus, severe allergic states, skin diseases, eye inflammation, breathing disorders like asthma, blood and kidney diseases, and certain cancers.

Methylprednisolone acetate injection (Depo-Medrol and others) is used by intramuscular injection when oral therapy isn't feasible, and can also be given directly into joints, soft tissue, or lesions to treat local inflammation from conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, and skin disorders. The injection is not approved for intrathecal (spinal) use.
