PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS
Why this applies to Amlodipine Besylate, Benazepril
Amlodipine Besylate, Benazepril falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Rue interacts with.
Rue contains photosensitizing furanocoumarins and psoralens and has been associated with multiple reports of phototoxic reactions. There is also one case report of an increased phototoxic response to psoralen and ultraviolet A (PUVA) therapy associated with ingestion of rue.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to keep in mind with Lotrel (which combines amlodipine and benazepril) and rue: this isn't about rue changing how your blood pressure medicine works in your bloodstream. It won't make your amlodipine or benazepril stronger or weaker. Instead, the concern is your skin. Both this medication and rue can make you more sensitive to sunlight, so stacking them together may bump up your odds of a sunburn-like reaction, redness, or a rash after being outdoors.
I'll be honest, this is a theoretical worry built on a few scattered case reports, not strong proof. Still, it's easy to play it safe with sunscreen, a hat, and shade. If you'd like to use rue, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

- Traditional folk remedy
Rue is a strong-smelling herb from southern Europe with a long history in folk medicine, but there is very little reliable human research to support its health uses.
