Saffron and Aspirin, Butalbital, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Saffron interacts with whole categories of medication. Aspirin, Butalbital, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Saffron in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Aspirin, Butalbital, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate

Aspirin, Butalbital, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Saffron interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of saffron and CNS depressants might have additive sedative effects.
Clinical research shows that taking saffron extract 60 mg orally daily for 26 weeks can cause drowsiness and sedation. Animal research suggests that adding saffron to hexobarbital further increases sleeping and slows motor activity.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the thing to keep an eye on with Fiorinal with Codeine: two of its ingredients, butalbital (a barbiturate) and codeine (an opioid), already calm down your nervous system. They can make you feel drowsy, foggy, or slow to react. Saffron, in concentrated supplement doses, has been shown to add a little drowsiness of its own, so stacking the two could leave you sleepier or more sluggish than you'd expect.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's mostly theoretical, based on how these things work plus some animal data, not strong human trials. Saffron in normal cooking amounts almost certainly won't matter. But before you start a saffron supplement alongside this medicine, run it past your pharmacist or doctor, and don't drive until you know how the combo affects you.

CAFFEINE

2 of 2

Aspirin, Butalbital, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate also falls under CAFFEINE.

Theoretically, saffron might inhibit the metabolism of caffeine.
A small clinical study suggests that taking saffron powder 300 mg in 150 mL water daily for 5 days and then taking caffeine 200 mg seems to reduce caffeine metabolite levels in the saliva and urine in males, but not females. Theoretically, this may be due to the inhibition of cytochrome P450 1A2 by saffron.

Here's the thing to know about Fiorinal with Codeine: it's a combination, and one of its ingredients is caffeine. The interaction we have on file is between saffron and caffeine specifically. Saffron may slow down an enzyme (CYP1A2) that clears caffeine from your body, so caffeine could hang around a bit longer and feel stronger than usual.

In real life, that might mean more jitteriness, a racing heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling wired. This comes from one small study, and oddly it showed up in men but not women, so the evidence is on the weaker side. A sprinkle of saffron in cooking almost certainly won't matter, but concentrated saffron supplements are a different story. Before pairing the two, just check with your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aspirin, Butalbital, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate page

“Fiorinal with Codeine packs four active drugs into one capsule, and I would treat its supplement list with genuine wariness rather than a quick skim. About Saffron

What is Saffron?

Saffron
  • Depression and low mood
  • Anxiety
  • PMS symptoms
  • Memory and cognition
  • Eye health (age-related macular degeneration)

Saffron is a costly spice that has shown promise in early studies for mild-to-moderate depression and some mood and PMS symptoms, but most research uses small trials, so results are not definitive. It is generally well tolerated in food and small supplement amounts, but high doses can be harmful and it should be avoided in pregnancy. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using saffron supplements.
