Saffron and Pindolol

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Pindolol

Pindolol falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Saffron interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of saffron with antihypertensive drugs might have additive effects.
Animal and human research suggests that saffron extract can decrease blood pressure.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: saffron may gently nudge your blood pressure down on its own, and since pindolol (Visken) is already working to lower your blood pressure, stacking the two could add up. The result might be readings that drop a little lower than expected, which can leave you feeling lightheaded, dizzy, tired, or wobbly when you stand up quickly.

I want to be honest about the evidence, though. This concern comes mostly from animal and early lab work, so it's more of a theoretical, watch-and-see situation than a proven problem. Cooking amounts of saffron in food are very unlikely to matter. Concentrated supplement doses are where I'd be more cautious. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding a saffron supplement, and don't change your pindolol on your own.

“People prescribed pindolol (Visken), a beta-blocker, are usually treating high blood pressure, and they are often the very people drawn to heart-friendly supplements like fish oil. That overlap is why this list of 183 ingredients deserves genuine care, starting with the five rated major.”

About Saffron

What is Saffron?

Saffron
  • Depression and low mood
  • Anxiety
  • PMS symptoms
  • Memory and cognition
  • Eye health (age-related macular degeneration)

Saffron is a costly spice that has shown promise in early studies for mild-to-moderate depression and some mood and PMS symptoms, but most research uses small trials, so results are not definitive. It is generally well tolerated in food and small supplement amounts, but high doses can be harmful and it should be avoided in pregnancy. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using saffron supplements.
