Panobinostat falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Sage interacts with.

Theoretically, sage might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro evidence suggests that aqueous extracts of sage can inhibit CYP3A4. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the short version: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear panobinostat (Farydak). In lab dishes, water-based sage extracts seem to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in a real person, panobinostat could build up and hit harder than intended, which might mean more of its known side effects, things like diarrhea, nausea, low blood counts, fatigue, and heart rhythm changes.

But please don't lose sleep over this. This concern comes only from test-tube work and has never actually been reported in people. The sage you sprinkle on food is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated sage extracts or capsules are the real question mark. Since panobinostat is a serious cancer drug, just run any sage supplement past your oncologist or pharmacist first.

Sage is a common kitchen herb that is generally safe in food amounts and is traditionally used for sore throats, digestion, sweating, and memory. Some early research is encouraging for sore throat and menopausal hot flashes, but most uses are not well proven. Concentrated extracts and the essential oil should be used carefully because high doses contain a compound called thujone, which can be harmful.

What Is Panobinostat Used For?

  • Panobinostat is used in combination with bortezomib (Velcade) and dexamethasone to treat people with multiple myeloma (a type of cancer of the bone marrow) who have already been treated two other medications, including bortezomib (Velcade). Panobinostat is in a class of medications called histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors. It works by killing cancer cells.
