Ethynodiol Diacetate, Mestranol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Schisandra interacts with.

Schisandra can increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Most clinical and laboratory research shows that schisandra, administered either as a single dose or up to twice daily for 14 days, inhibits CYP3A4 and increases the concentration of CYP3A4 substrates such as cyclophosphamide, midazolam, tacrolimus, and talinolol. Although one in vitro and animal study shows that schisandra may induce CYP3A4 metabolism, this effect appears to be overpowered by schisandra's CYP3A4 inhibitory activity and has not been reported in humans.

Ovulen is a birth control pill that combines two hormones (ethynodiol diacetate and mestranol). Your body relies on the liver enzyme CYP3A4 to break these hormones down. Schisandra appears to slow that enzyme down, so the thinking is that hormone levels could run a little higher than usual while you take both.

In practice, that mostly means a greater chance of estrogen-related side effects, like nausea, breast tenderness, bloating, headaches, or mood changes. The good news is this concern comes from lab and animal research, not real human reports with this pill, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since the levels could shift, it's worth running it past your pharmacist or doctor before adding schisandra.
