Why this applies to Nilutamide

Nilutamide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES — the group Schisandra interacts with.

Theoretically, schisandra might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro research shows that schisandra inhibits CYP2C19, and animal research shows that schisandra increases the concentration of voriconazole, a CYP2C19 substrate. Theoretically, schisandra may also inhibit the metabolism of other CYP2C19 substrates. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the idea behind this pairing. Nilutamide is partly cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP2C19, and Schisandra appears to slow that enzyme down. If that enzyme works more slowly, Nilutamide could build up to higher levels in your body than expected. With this drug, more in your system can mean more of its known side effects, things like nausea, hot flashes, dizziness, trouble seeing in dim light or adjusting to bright light, and (less often) breathing problems or liver strain.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. This concern comes from lab and animal studies, not from real people taking these two together, so it's theoretical for now. Still, since Nilutamide is a serious cancer medicine, please run Schisandra past your oncologist or pharmacist before starting it rather than guessing.

What Is Nilutamide Used For?

Brand names: Nilandron, Anandron

Nilutamide tablets are used together with surgical castration (removal of the testicles) to treat metastatic prostate cancer — prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body (Stage D2). It is not used alone; it works as part of this combined treatment approach.

For the best results, treatment with nilutamide should begin on the same day as surgical castration, or the day after.
