Here's the idea with selenium and Tavalisse (fostamatinib): fostamatinib calms down an overactive immune system so your body stops destroying platelets. Selenium, on the other hand, may give the immune system a little nudge to be more active. So in theory, taking selenium could work against what fostamatinib is trying to do, which might mean your platelet count doesn't climb as well as hoped (more bruising or bleeding).

That said, I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. This concern comes mostly from lab and animal studies, not from people taking these two together. The amount of selenium in a normal, varied diet is very unlikely to matter. Higher-dose selenium supplements are where I'd pause. If you're thinking about a supplement, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first so they can check your levels.

What Is Fostamatinib Used For?

Brand name: Tavalisse

Tavalisse (fostamatinib) is used to treat thrombocytopenia — dangerously low platelet counts — in adults with chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). It is specifically for people whose platelet counts have not improved enough with at least one earlier ITP treatment.

The goal is to raise platelet counts high enough to reduce the risk of serious bleeding. If platelet counts do not respond sufficiently after 12 weeks, the medication is typically stopped.
