Selenium + Pomalidomide
Pomalidomide brand name: Pomalyst.
Selenium has a moderate interaction with Pomalidomide. Theoretically, selenium supplementation may reduce the effectiveness of immunosuppressant therapy.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS
Why this applies to Pomalidomide
Pomalidomide falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Selenium interacts with.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence suggests that selenium may stimulate the immune system.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thinking behind pairing selenium with Pomalyst (pomalidomide). Pomalidomide actually works partly by adjusting your immune system, and selenium, at least in lab and test-tube studies, may give the immune system a little nudge of its own. The concern on file is theoretical: in principle, selenium might pull against the immune effects pomalidomide is trying to produce, which could in turn make your myeloma or Kaposi's sarcoma treatment a touch less effective.
I want to be straight with you, though. This is based on early lab work, not solid human studies, so it's more of a caution than a proven problem. Getting selenium from a normal diet is very unlikely to matter. Before adding a selenium supplement during cancer treatment, please run it by your oncologist or pharmacist first.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Pomalidomide page
“Pomalidomide (Pomalyst) treats multiple myeloma, and with a cancer medicine carrying stakes this high, my honest read is that this list calls for real vigilance. Start with the three entries rated major.”

About Selenium
What is Selenium?
- Thyroid health support
- Antioxidant support
- Immune support
- General nutrient supplementation
- Reproductive/fertility support
Selenium is an essential trace mineral your body needs in small amounts for thyroid function, antioxidant defense, and immune health. Most people who eat a varied diet get enough, and supplements are mainly useful for those who are deficient. Because too much selenium can be toxic, stick to recommended amounts and check with your pharmacist or doctor before supplementing.
About Pomalidomide
What Is Pomalidomide Used For?
Brand name: Pomalyst
Pomalidomide capsules treat two types of cancer in adults. The first is multiple myeloma, a cancer of the blood's plasma cells. It is used together with dexamethasone in people who have already tried at least two other treatments, including lenalidomide and a proteasome inhibitor, and whose disease progressed on or within 60 days of the last one.
The second is Kaposi sarcoma. It is used for AIDS-related Kaposi sarcoma after highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has failed, and for Kaposi sarcoma in people who are HIV-negative. This use was approved under accelerated approval based on response rate, and continued approval may depend on confirmatory trials.
