Here's the thinking behind this one. Deflazacort is a corticosteroid we use to calm down an overactive immune response, which is exactly how it helps in Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Concentrated shiitake extracts (like lentinan) seem to do the opposite, nudging the immune system to be more active. So in theory, regular use of strong shiitake supplements could work against what Deflazacort is trying to accomplish.

I'll be honest with you though, this concern comes from lab (test-tube) studies, not real patient cases, so it's more of a theoretical caution than something I see causing problems day to day. Eating shiitake as food is very unlikely to matter. If you're considering a concentrated shiitake supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first so they can weigh it for your situation.

What Is Deflazacort Used For?

Brand name: Emflaza

Deflazacort treats Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a rare genetic muscle disease that causes progressive muscle weakness. It is available under several brand names, each with slightly different age approvals.

Emflaza and Jaythari (both tablets and oral suspension) are approved for patients 2 years of age and older. Deflazacort tablets, Deflazacort oral suspension, Kymbee (tablet and oral suspension), and Pyquvi (oral suspension) are approved for patients 5 years of age and older.
