ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS
Why this applies to Riociguat
Riociguat falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Soy interacts with.
Although some contradictory research exists, most clinical evidence suggests that consuming soy protein modestly reduces systolic and diastolic blood pressure in individuals with prehypertension or hypertension.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with riociguat (Adempas) and soy. Riociguat works by relaxing and widening blood vessels, which lowers pressure in your lung arteries but can also nudge your overall blood pressure down. Soy protein, eaten regularly, may modestly lower blood pressure on its own. So the concern is simply that the two could add up and drop your numbers a little more than expected.
If that happened, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, faint, or wobbly, especially when standing up quickly. The good news: this is a theoretical, mild concern, and ordinary soy foods (tofu, edamame, soy milk) are unlikely to cause trouble for most people. Concentrated soy supplements are more worth a heads-up. Don't change anything on your own, just mention your soy use to your pharmacist or doctor.

About Soy
What is Soy?
- Menopause symptoms (hot flashes)
- Heart and cholesterol health
- Bone health
- Plant-based protein source
- General nutrition
Soy is a nutritious bean that is a staple food and a popular source of plant protein and isoflavones. Eating soy foods as part of a balanced diet is generally considered safe for most people, and there is moderate evidence it may modestly help cholesterol and some menopause symptoms, though results vary. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated soy isoflavone supplements, especially if you have a history of hormone-sensitive conditions.
About Riociguat
What Is Riociguat Used For?
Brand name: Adempas
Riociguat tablets — sold as Adempas and under the generic name Riociguat — are used to treat adults with two types of pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs).
The first is chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH), a condition caused by blood clots in the lung arteries, either after surgery or when surgery is not an option. The second is pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), where the arteries carrying blood to the lungs are narrowed or blocked. In both conditions, riociguat helps improve exercise ability and functional status, and in PAH it also helps slow the disease from getting worse.

Riociguat Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Riociguat as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Soy — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
