Why this applies to tipranavir

tipranavir falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES — the group Strawberry interacts with.

In vitro research suggests that strawberry extract can inhibit p-glycoprotein efflux. Theoretically, strawberry might inhibit p-glycoprotein mediated drug efflux and potentially increase levels of drugs that are substrates of p-glycoprotein. Until more is known, strawberry should be used cautiously in people taking p-glycoprotein substrates.
Drugs that might be affected include some chemotherapeutic agents (etoposide, paclitaxel, vinblastine, vincristine, vindesine), antifungals (ketoconazole, itraconazole), protease inhibitors (amprenavir, indinavir, nelfinavir, saquinavir), H2 antagonists (cimetidine, ranitidine), some calcium channel blockers (diltiazem, verapamil), corticosteroids, erythromycin, cisapride (Propulsid), fexofenadine (Allegra), cyclosporine, loperamide (Imodium), quinidine, and others.

Here's the basic idea with tipranavir (Aptivus) and strawberry. Tipranavir is moved around your body by a pump called P-glycoprotein. In a test tube, strawberry extract seemed to slow that pump down. If that happened in a person, a bit more tipranavir could stay in the blood, which in theory might mean a little more chance of side effects like nausea, diarrhea, stomach upset, or changes in your liver tests.

I want to keep this in perspective, though. This is based only on lab research, not real patients, so it's quite theoretical. Enjoying strawberries as food is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated strawberry supplements are the bigger question mark, so run those by your pharmacist or HIV doctor before starting. Please don't change your tipranavir on your own.

What Is Tipranavir Used For?

Brand name: Aptivus

Aptivus (tipranavir) is used to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and in pediatric patients weighing at least 36 kg (about 79 lbs). It is specifically for people who have already tried other HIV treatments and whose virus has become resistant to more than one protease inhibitor. It is always taken together with a low dose of ritonavir and with other HIV medications.

Aptivus is not recommended for people who have never taken HIV treatment before (treatment-naïve patients). Using tipranavir alongside additional active HIV drugs improves the chances of it working well.
