In vitro research shows that rhodiola inhibits CYP2C9. This effect is highly variable and appears to be dependent on the rhodiola product studied. Also, a clinical study in healthy young males found that taking rhodiola extract 290 mg daily for 14 days reduces the metabolism of losartan, a CYP2C9 substrate, by 21% after 4 hours.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the basic idea: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2C9 to help break down certain medicines. Rhodiola may slow that enzyme down a little, so a drug it clears could build up more than usual. Tipranavir isn't a prodrug, so if its levels rose, you'd expect a stronger drug effect and a higher chance of side effects like nausea, diarrhea, stomach upset, or changes in liver tests.
I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes mostly from lab studies plus one small human study on a different drug, and tipranavir is actually cleared mainly by a different enzyme system, so any real-world effect here is uncertain. Don't change anything on your own. Just run it by your HIV pharmacist or doctor before adding rhodiola, since keeping HIV treatment steady really matters.

In vitro research shows that rhodiola inhibits P-glycoprotein. Theoretically, using rhodiola with P-glycoprotein substrates might increase drug levels and potentially increase the risk of adverse effects.

Here's the gist for tipranavir (Aptivus): your body uses a kind of cellular bouncer called P-glycoprotein to help move this drug around and push some of it back out. Lab studies suggest Rhodiola might slow that bouncer down. In theory, that could let a bit more tipranavir build up in your system, which might nudge up side effects like nausea, diarrhea, stomach upset, or tiredness.
I want to be honest about the strength here: this is based only on test-tube research, not real people, so it's mostly theoretical. Tipranavir is a key part of your HIV regimen, though, so I wouldn't add Rhodiola without checking first. Please run it by your pharmacist or HIV doctor before starting it.

However, a clinical study in healthy young males found that taking rhodiola extract 290 mg daily for 14 days does not inhibit the metabolism of caffeine, a CYP1A2 substrate.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

What Is Tipranavir Used For?
Brand name: Aptivus
Aptivus (tipranavir) is used to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and in pediatric patients weighing at least 36 kg (about 79 lbs). It is specifically for people who have already tried other HIV treatments and whose virus has become resistant to more than one protease inhibitor. It is always taken together with a low dose of ritonavir and with other HIV medications.
Aptivus is not recommended for people who have never taken HIV treatment before (treatment-naïve patients). Using tipranavir alongside additional active HIV drugs improves the chances of it working well.
