Why this applies to Temazepam

Temazepam falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Rhodiola interacts with.

Theoretically, rhodiola might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that rhodiola inhibits CYP3A4. This effect is highly variable and appears to be dependent on the rhodiola product studied. However, a clinical study in healthy young males found that taking rhodiola extract 290 mg daily for 14 days does not inhibit the metabolism of midazolam, a CYP3A4 substrate.

Here's the gist for Restoril (temazepam) and rhodiola. In the test tube, rhodiola can slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, and temazepam is partly handled by that pathway. In theory, that could let a little more temazepam build up, which might mean more next-day grogginess, drowsiness, or unsteadiness.

But I'd keep this in perspective. Temazepam relies less on CYP3A4 than many sleep medicines, and a real human study found rhodiola didn't actually slow the breakdown of a similar drug. The evidence here is weak and mostly theoretical, so a serious problem is unlikely. Still, if you notice extra morning sleepiness, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

A review of adverse event reports in Poland identified cases of excessive sedation, myoclonus, hypotension, and hallucinations when rhodiola was taken with haloperidol, diazepam, or alprazolam.

Here's the simple version: Temazepam (Restoril) is a sleep medicine that calms down brain activity. Rhodiola is an herb people take for energy and stress, but a few real-world reports suggest it may add to that calming effect when paired with sedatives like this one. The concern isn't about how your body breaks the drug down, it's that the two together could make you more drowsy than expected.

In practice, that might mean stronger grogginess, dizziness, low blood pressure, or feeling foggy and unsteady the next morning. This is based on anecdotal reports, not strong studies, so it's considered minor and only possible. Still, since both affect your brain, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Temazepam capsules — sold as Restoril and under the generic name Temazepam — are indicated for the short-term treatment of insomnia, generally 7 to 10 days. They help people fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.

This medication is intended for short periods only. If sleep trouble doesn't improve within 7 to 10 days, that may signal an underlying medical or psychiatric condition that needs its own evaluation.
