Formoterol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Rhodiola interacts with.

Theoretically, rhodiola might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
In vitro research shows that rhodiola inhibits CYP2C9. This effect is highly variable and appears to be dependent on the rhodiola product studied. Also, a clinical study in healthy young males found that taking rhodiola extract 290 mg daily for 14 days reduces the metabolism of losartan, a CYP2C9 substrate, by 21% after 4 hours.

Here's the idea behind this pairing. Rhodiola may gently slow down a liver enzyme called CYP2C9, and the file lists Formoterol as a drug handled by that pathway. In theory, if that enzyme works more slowly, a bit more Formoterol could hang around in your body. Formoterol is not a prodrug, so more of it means stronger effects, not weaker ones.

If that happened, you might notice more of Formoterol's usual side effects, like a faster or pounding heartbeat, shaky hands, headache, or feeling jittery. That said, this is mostly theoretical and based on weak evidence, and the effect was small and inconsistent in studies. Please don't stop either one. Just run it by your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you notice palpitations or tremors.

What Is Formoterol Oral Inhalation Used For?

Brand names: Foradil Aerolizer, Atimos Modulite, Oxis Turbohaler, Perforomist, Foradil Certihaler

Formoterol fumarate inhalation solution is used for the long-term maintenance treatment of airway narrowing (bronchoconstriction) in adults with COPD, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It is taken twice daily — morning and evening — as a regular, ongoing treatment.

Important limits: This medication is not for relieving sudden COPD flare-ups or breathlessness in the moment, and it is not approved to treat asthma. A separate short-acting inhaler should always be on hand for sudden symptoms.
