Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with pork insulin and rhodiola. Insulin already does the heavy lifting of lowering your blood sugar. The concern on file is that rhodiola, at least in lab and animal studies, may nudge blood sugar down a little on its own. Stack that small effect on top of your insulin and, in theory, your sugar could drop lower than you expect.

What that can feel like: shakiness, sweating, a racing heart, confusion, or feeling lightheaded, the usual signs of a low. I want to be honest though, this is theoretical and based only on lab work, not strong human studies. So don't panic. Just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up before adding rhodiola, and keep an eye on your sugars if you do.

  • Stress and coping (adaptogen)
  • Mental performance and focus
  • Mild depression
  • Physical and exercise performance

Rhodiola is an herb traditionally used to fight fatigue and help the body cope with stress. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before trying it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
