Rhodiola and Betamethasone

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Rhodiola interacts with whole categories of medication. Betamethasone falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Rhodiola in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Betamethasone

Betamethasone falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES — the group Rhodiola interacts with.

Theoretically, rhodiola might increase levels of P-glycoprotein substrates.
In vitro research shows that rhodiola inhibits P-glycoprotein. Theoretically, using rhodiola with P-glycoprotein substrates might increase drug levels and potentially increase the risk of adverse effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: Betamethasone can ride through the body using a transporter called P-glycoprotein, which helps move drugs in and out of cells. Lab studies suggest Rhodiola may slow that transporter down. In theory, that could let a bit more betamethasone hang around, slightly raising the chance of steroid-type effects.

I want to keep this in perspective, though. The evidence here comes only from test-tube research, so it's theoretical, not something we've clearly seen in people. It also matters a lot that you're using betamethasone as a cream or ointment on the skin, where very little gets into the bloodstream. For most folks that makes a real interaction unlikely. Still, it never hurts to mention your Rhodiola to your pharmacist or doctor so they can double-check for your situation.

Moderate

IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS

2 of 2

Betamethasone also falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS.

Theoretically, rhodiola use might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
In vitro and animal research show that rhodiola has immunostimulatory effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the basic idea: betamethasone is a corticosteroid that works by calming down inflammation and dialing back the immune response. Rhodiola, on the other hand, has shown immune-stimulating effects in lab and animal studies. So in theory, the two could work against each other, with rhodiola nudging the immune system in the opposite direction from what betamethasone is trying to do.

I'll be honest with you though, this concern comes only from test tube and animal research, not from people, so it's quite theoretical. It matters far more for folks on strong oral or injected steroids for serious conditions than for someone using a betamethasone cream or ointment on the skin, where very little gets into the body. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Betamethasone page

“Betamethasone (Celestone, Diprolene) works by quieting the immune system, which is exactly why this list warrants a slow, careful read. More than fifty of the ingredients here are immune stimulants that can push back against the steroid, and another sizable group changes how much of the drug the body absorbs or holds onto.”
