Why this applies to Riluzole

Riluzole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Rhodiola interacts with.

Theoretically, rhodiola might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
In vitro research shows that rhodiola inhibits CYP1A2. This effect is highly variable and appears to be dependent on the rhodiola product studied. However, a clinical study in healthy young males found that taking rhodiola extract 290 mg daily for 14 days does not inhibit the metabolism of caffeine, a CYP1A2 substrate.

Here's the simple version: your body clears riluzole mainly through a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. Rhodiola has shown in lab (test tube) studies that it may slow that same enzyme down a bit. If that happened in your body, riluzole could clear a little slower and build up, which in theory might nudge up its usual side effects like dizziness, nausea, tiredness, or changes in liver tests.

I want to be honest about how shaky this is, though. The concern comes from lab data, and a real human study found rhodiola did not actually slow down a similar CYP1A2 drug (caffeine). So in practice this is rated minor and the effect is unpredictable. Still, since you take riluzole regularly, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding rhodiola.

Riluzole is approved to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) — the progressive neurological disease also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. This indication is shared across all available riluzole products, including tablets (Rilutek, riluzole), the dissolving oral film (Exservan), and the oral suspension (Tiglutik).

Tiglutik oral suspension is notable in that it can also be given through a PEG-tube (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube) for patients who have difficulty swallowing.
