Rhodiola + Omeprazole, Sodium Bicarbonate
Omeprazole, Sodium Bicarbonate brand name: Konvomep.
Omeprazole, Sodium Bicarbonate falls into 2 drug categories that Rhodiola can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, rhodiola might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Rhodiola interacts with whole categories of medication. Omeprazole, Sodium Bicarbonate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Rhodiola in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Omeprazole, Sodium Bicarbonate
Omeprazole, Sodium Bicarbonate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Rhodiola interacts with.
In vitro research shows that rhodiola inhibits CYP2C9. This effect is highly variable and appears to be dependent on the rhodiola product studied. Also, a clinical study in healthy young males found that taking rhodiola extract 290 mg daily for 14 days reduces the metabolism of losartan, a CYP2C9 substrate, by 21% after 4 hours.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with Konvomep (omeprazole plus sodium bicarbonate): rhodiola may slow down a liver enzyme called CYP2C9, and omeprazole is partly handled by that pathway. If rhodiola blocks it a little, omeprazole could build up slightly in your system. That's not a prodrug situation, so more drug means a bit more drug effect, perhaps stronger acid suppression or minor side effects like headache, nausea, or loose stools.
Honestly, this is mostly theoretical. The lab signal is shaky and varies a lot by product, and the one human study showed only a modest 21% change with a different medicine. For most people this is unlikely to cause real trouble. Still, since combining herbs with prescriptions can be unpredictable, run it by your pharmacist or doctor before pairing the two.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Omeprazole, Sodium Bicarbonate also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that rhodiola inhibits CYP3A4. This effect is highly variable and appears to be dependent on the rhodiola product studied. However, a clinical study in healthy young males found that taking rhodiola extract 290 mg daily for 14 days does not inhibit the metabolism of midazolam, a CYP3A4 substrate.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with omeprazole/sodium bicarbonate (Konvomep) and rhodiola. In lab dishes, rhodiola can mildly block CYP3A4, one of the liver enzymes that helps clear omeprazole. In theory, slowing that enzyme could let a bit more omeprazole linger in your system. If that happened, you might notice slightly more of its usual effects, like headache, nausea, gas, or loose stools.
That said, this is mostly a theoretical concern. A real-world study in healthy men found rhodiola didn't actually change how the body handled a similar CYP3A4 drug, and the effect varies a lot by product. Omeprazole isn't a prodrug, so it doesn't flip in the opposite direction. I wouldn't lose sleep over this one, but it's still worth a quick mention to your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About Rhodiola
What is Rhodiola?
- Fatigue and low energy
- Stress and coping (adaptogen)
- Mental performance and focus
- Mild depression
- Physical and exercise performance
Rhodiola is an herb traditionally used to fight fatigue and help the body cope with stress. Some small studies suggest it may modestly reduce fatigue and improve mood, but the evidence is limited and not strong. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before trying it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
