Why this applies to Vincristine

Vincristine falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES — the group Strawberry interacts with.

In vitro research suggests that strawberry extract can inhibit p-glycoprotein efflux. Theoretically, strawberry might inhibit p-glycoprotein mediated drug efflux and potentially increase levels of drugs that are substrates of p-glycoprotein. Until more is known, strawberry should be used cautiously in people taking p-glycoprotein substrates.
Drugs that might be affected include some chemotherapeutic agents (etoposide, paclitaxel, vinblastine, vincristine, vindesine), antifungals (ketoconazole, itraconazole), protease inhibitors (amprenavir, indinavir, nelfinavir, saquinavir), H2 antagonists (cimetidine, ranitidine), some calcium channel blockers (diltiazem, verapamil), corticosteroids, erythromycin, cisapride (Propulsid), fexofenadine (Allegra), cyclosporine, loperamide (Imodium), quinidine, and others.

Here's the simple version: your body uses a tiny cellular pump called P-glycoprotein to push certain drugs back out of cells, and vincristine is one of the medicines that pump moves around. In a lab dish, strawberry extract slowed that pump down. If that happened in a real person, more vincristine could linger in the body, which in theory could mean stronger effects and more side effects like nerve tingling or numbness, constipation, or low blood counts.

The important part: this is only test-tube and animal data, so it's very theoretical, and eating strawberries in normal food amounts is unlikely to be a problem. Concentrated strawberry supplements are the bigger question mark. Since vincristine is serious chemo, please run any strawberry supplement past your oncology team or pharmacist first.

Vincristine Sulfate Injection is approved to treat acute leukemia. It is also used as part of combination chemotherapy regimens for Hodgkin's disease, non-Hodgkin's malignant lymphomas, rhabdomyosarcoma (a soft-tissue cancer), neuroblastoma (a cancer of nerve tissue), and Wilms' tumor (a kidney cancer in children).

Because it works best alongside other cancer medicines, vincristine is almost always given as part of a multi-drug treatment plan rather than on its own.
