Here's the concern with pairing Sweet Annie and Binimetinib (Mektovi): both can be tough on the liver. Binimetinib already carries a known risk of raising liver enzymes and, less often, causing more serious liver injury, which is why your oncology team checks your bloodwork regularly. There's some evidence that Sweet Annie may also stress the liver, so the worry is that stacking the two could add up and strain your liver more.

I'll be honest, this one is theoretical and based on weak, anecdotal evidence, not solid studies, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, with a cancer medication this important, it's not worth gambling. Please don't start or stop anything on your own. Check with your oncologist or pharmacist before adding Sweet Annie.

Sweet Annie (Artemisia annua) is the source of artemisinin, a compound used in prescription antimalarial drugs. While the purified drug is well studied for malaria, the herb itself as a supplement is not proven for the wide range of conditions people use it for, and self-treating malaria with the raw herb is dangerous. What Is Binimetinib Used For?

Brand name: Mektovi

Mektovi (binimetinib) is used in combination with another medicine called encorafenib. Together, they treat unresectable (cannot be surgically removed) or metastatic (spread to other parts of the body) melanoma in patients whose tumors have a BRAF V600E or V600K mutation, as confirmed by an FDA-approved test.

Mektovi, used with encorafenib, is also approved for adult patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that carries a BRAF V600E mutation, again confirmed by an FDA-approved test. In both cases, testing for the specific mutation is required before starting treatment.
