Here's the concern with pairing Sweet Annie and your propylthiouracil (PTU). This isn't about one changing the blood level of the other. Instead, both can be hard on the liver, so taking them together may add up and put extra strain on it. PTU already carries a known (though uncommon) risk of liver injury, and there's some worry that Sweet Annie can affect the liver too.

Honestly, this is based on weak, theoretical evidence, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, keep an eye out for signs like yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness, and report them right away. Before combining these, please check with your doctor or pharmacist.

Sweet Annie (Artemisia annua) is the source of artemisinin, a compound used in prescription antimalarial drugs. While the purified drug is well studied for malaria, the herb itself as a supplement is not proven for the wide range of conditions people use it for, and self-treating malaria with the raw herb is dangerous. About Propylthiouracil

What Is Propylthiouracil Used For?

Brand name: Propylthiouracil

Propylthiouracil tablets are used to treat hyperthyroidism — a condition where the thyroid gland produces too much hormone. It is specifically approved for patients with Graves' disease or toxic multinodular goiter who cannot tolerate methimazole and for whom surgery or radioactive iodine therapy is not a suitable option.

Propylthiouracil is also used to reduce hyperthyroid symptoms before a patient undergoes thyroid surgery (thyroidectomy) or radioactive iodine therapy, again in patients who cannot tolerate methimazole. It may also be the preferred antithyroid drug during or just before the first trimester of pregnancy.
